President al-Assad issues Law No. 20 of 2022 to reorganize the criminal legal rules for information crime

President Bashar al-Assad issued Law No. 20 of 2022, which reorganizes the criminal legal rules for information crime included in Legislative Decree No. 17 of 2012.
The law aims to combat information crime in line with the technological development and the high rate of its spread in society, to protect legal interests, regulate freedoms in the virtual world, and limit the misuse of technical means.

The law reframes the legal concept of information crime to include many forms and forms of criminal behavior related to information and information systems, which have begun to witness a significant increase in Syrian society, including information fraud, violation of privacy, slander, slander, electronic contempt, crimes against decency or modesty, and crimes against the constitution and undermining prestige. The state or its financial position, in addition to publishing illegal audio or video recordings without the consent of the owner, and crimes related to the electronic card and information theft.

The law also details the penalties and fines imposed for crimes by service providers on the network and for perpetrators of information crimes. It includes an increase in the penalty in the event that the crime is committed against a public authority, in addition to tightening penalties for some crimes that have increased in spread and committed through electronic means such as slander, electronic slander, and offenses against With modesty and crimes against the Constitution.

The penalties and fines stipulated in the law range from one month to 15 years in prison, according to the type of information crime, and fines for previous penalties range from 200,000 to 15 million Syrian pounds.
